Underground water in my backyard. What/where is this from?
I recently dug three holes in my backyard to install an arbor. One hole has filled with water. After emptying the water, I could see water streaming back into the hole. Within two hours, it had fill with 12.25 inches of water. I dug two of the holes 36 inches deep, but the hole with the water is about 20-22 inches deep. I decided to stop in order to figure out where the water is coming from before proceeding. I understand that I may be able to use products to get around the water and continue with the arbor installation, but I would like to know where the water is coming from. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? I live in a large city in the midwest and have never heard of this. Thanks for your help!
You may have an unusually high water table......wow! Are you near a river, lake?
Look around, are there properties higher than you that might be draining water into your yard? How's your water bill? You might have a leak......tho usually that's front yard with water service line. Do you have a sprinkler system that might be leaking. You might also have a subsurface stream on your property.
Do you have a septic system and the field is saturated?
Dig some more holes to see if this is uniform or just a portion of your yard.......maybe a major city line runs just outside your property and it is leaking........though usually that creates sink holes under the leak, not flooded yard.......unless you are on top of a rock layer........hmmmm.
Yeah, you can pour concrete pilings in sonotubes to create the footings for your arbor.....overkill but more water resistant.
You might want to ask around to see of others in your area have the same problem. I assume you don't have a basement............
