DId i choose the wrong engineering major?
I am currently a Geological Engineer major. I am in my classes and it seems like this major is a different kind of engineering than I want to do? I really like fly fishing and would like to design fly rods and reels. I also am interested in the oil industry and I would also like to learn about designing oil rigs or searching for the oil as well. I also look at engineering in the money aspect. I know as an engineer I will make good money. I just feel like I am in kind of deep into my field. I want ot stay in engineering, but I feel like I am in the wrong field. Help! If it helps I am a junior this year and if so are you an engineer. If so does the major of the eniginer really matter or will I become a special type of engineer in another field. THANKS!
I am an engineering, and like many people that I graduated with were asking themselves the same question "Is this the right engineering for me?". Well from the sounds of what you would like to do, it comes off like you want to be a petroleum engineer or a mechanical engineer. Both deal with the oil industry. Petroleum is much more refined (sorry for the pun) in the oil industry (drilling for example) but the highest paying (at least last I checked; my petroleum engineering friend just started off at 73). In my opinion, ME is the broadest of the engineers so it gives you a lot of freedom. I graduated with 50 some odd students and they are scattered in at least 15 different fields (design, R&D, government, oil, manufacturing, etc).
But to answer your questions more specifically, I don't think you're too far into your major to change. It might put you back a semester, or 2 at the most, but doing something that you dont want to for the rest of your life would be much worse (the meat of engineering classes doesnt start until junior year anyway). Theres also a good chance that if you do stick it out, you could get hired in the oil industry out of college and do what you want. But as far as designing fly rods and things, I don't see that in your future; thats a bit too far outside your major's interest (from my knowledge). I hope all this helps.
