zone alarm firewall and no anti-virus?

My sisters boyfriend set up my Dad's network. This guy was a CIS major and does freelance computer work. Anyway, when he was setting up the main machine we all use he only put zone alarm firewall with no anti-virus. He said that as long as we set our permissions correctly (allow or deny access) then we have no use for anti-virus or anti-malware software. He also said that anti-virus programs decrease the overall life of the computer due to the scans it'll make.

This logic flies in the face of how my friends and I think computers should work... Is he right? or should we install Avast or Norton on top of zone alarm?

Were running windows 7.
thx for the info everyone! ^_^ Im thinking of installing Avast! or perhaps MS Security essentials

@ Vampire Muffin... WOW thats pretty harsh! Do you work for Norton?

Here is his thinking, because he knows how to stay safe, he thinks you do also.. Best bet is to put some av program on the computer, someone will click something or go somewhere and then you will be infected. ~

Edit : Either of those two would be good, i use two other programs, malwarebytes and superantispyware.
