How can I catch a trout? Wanganui River, December Summer, Brown Trout/Rainbow Trout?

I will be canoing down the Wanganui River for 4-5 days and will pass some great places to fish.
I have tried fly fishing before and can cast, but I didn't catch any fish after 3 days (20 hours) so gave up.
I will ask at a fly fishing shop, but would GREATLY appreciate any detailed advice. I have never fished in a river.
Main questions are should I dry fly, or wet?
What flies should I use?
Where should I fish? pools?...I would try to find deep slow moving water, maybe under an overhang, next to fast water where the fish is waiting for food to pass by.
How should I fish in the area you suggest? eg. cast into the top of the pool and let the current drag it down.

Buy a few Egg Sacks, Haves to be Red or green...

I used Bubble gum worm lots of time caught monsters..

To get bubble gum worm listen or you wont find it..

Take that.. MAKE SURE IT IS SMALL AND SKINNY! OR YOU WILL CATCH SALMON/STEELHEAD
