Fly Fishing Reels

Rods can be quite expensive, yet any true fly fisherman knows to place equal importance on a quality reel. Without well made fly fishing reels, the best rod in the world won’t help you land that big wall mount trout, no matter how much skill you have. A poor reel will not let the line out smoothly, and will easily become tangled in a turbulent situation. So before you let a shoddy reel ruin your next fishing expedition, take some time to research what is available.

There are several different types of reels available- the most popular being single action. Single action refers to the ratio of 1:1 with which this reel operates. In other words, one single turn of the handle equals one loop of line. This allows the mechanism to be relatively simple, as there are obviously less moving parts involved.

Because they lack complexity, the spools can hold more line and are extremely simple to switch out. They are by far the most durable and dependable type, again due to the relative simplicity of their mechanism. While most companies also offer automatic and multiplying fly reels, the single action is most commonly used by serious anglers.

Two different drag systems are available for your fly fishing reels. Spring-and-pawl fly reels are generally only used for delicate fishing of light fish. On the other hand the disc-drag fly reel is used for the majority of heavy fly fishing.

One last consideration which is no less important to an angler purchasing a new rig is the weight of the equipment. You must remember that the weight of the rod, reel, and line must all correspond with each other for maximum cast distance and accuracy. For instance, if you line is five weight then your rod and reel should be five weight as well.

You can check out your local outdoor department store for a selection of fly fishing reels; however there are other options open to the tech savvy sportsman. The internet, particularly the online auction house eBay, has great deals on quality equipment.

Before you buy, make sure you are well informed. That way you won’t come home telling stories about the one that got away!
